Spider veins and redness

Red threads on the cheeks and the sides of the nose, or redness that does not go away, are a very common problem, especially with fair and thin skin. It can be eased, and at the same time you can take better care of your skin every day.

What it is

Spider veins are dilated, visible tiny blood vessels just under the surface of the skin. They look like red or purple threads, most often on the cheeks, the sides of the nose and the chin. Redness is persistent flushing that can be constant or get stronger with emotion, heat or alcohol.

Spider veins are often accompanied by sensitive skin and a tendency to rosacea. That is why, before we plan a treatment, we assess exactly what is visible on the skin and how it reacts to stimuli.

Where it comes from

  • Genetics and thin skin. Fair, delicate skin more often has visible spider veins.
  • The sun. UV radiation weakens the vessel walls and increases redness.
  • Temperature changes. Frost, sauna and hot drinks dilate the vessels.
  • Alcohol, spicy food, stress. They can cause sudden flushing of the face.
  • Rosacea. It is a chronic skin disease whose symptom is redness and visible spider veins.
  • Overly aggressive skincare. Strong peels and intense rubbing irritate the skin and worsen redness.

How to recognise it

  • Red or purple threads on the cheeks and nose
  • Persistent redness that does not go away
  • Redness that gets stronger after alcohol, heat or stress
  • Sensitive skin that reacts quickly to cosmetics

How we solve it

Lumecca, an IPL light, acts on vascular changes: it closes tiny spider veins or makes them less visible, and eases redness. Symptoms of rosacea are also among the indications for the treatment. We choose the treatment after assessing the skin.

A series of treatments is usually needed, and between them gentle care and sun protection are important. Spider veins can be reduced, but the tendency to form them remains, which is why we recommend looking after the skin also after the series is finished.

Tissue stimulators and biorevitalisation can be a supplement. They strengthen and hydrate the skin and improve its elasticity, which helps look after its condition after treatments for spider veins.

Treatments that help

What you can do every day

  • Use sun protection
  • Do not use oils
  • Do not massage the face

When to book a consultation

If redness is accompanied by spots, burning, a feeling of tightness or a sudden flare-up, first consult a dermatologist. It may be rosacea, which needs diagnosis and treatment.

Usually a series of treatments. We set the number after assessing the skin at the consultation, because it depends on the number and size of the changes.

The sensations are mild, and we adjust the device settings to the sensitivity of the skin. After the treatment the skin may be briefly red.

The information is general and does not replace a consultation with a doctor.
