Bruxism – botulinum toxin
Bruxism is the unconscious clenching and grinding of teeth, most often at night. It overloads the chewing muscles, the jaw joints and the teeth themselves. A treatment with botulinum toxin relaxes the overactive masseter muscles and reduces their strength, which eases tension and pain.
About the treatment
We inject the toxin at several points in the masseter muscles, and sometimes in the temporal muscles too. The product temporarily reduces the signal passing from the nerve to the muscle, so the muscle clenches with less force. You can still eat and speak, because the muscles keep working, only more gently. The treatment is short, done with a fine needle, and you return to your day straight afterwards.
The first results usually show after 7-14 days. The jaw feels less tense, headaches are less frequent, and you no longer wake up with tired facial muscles. With regular treatments the masseter muscles can shrink, which sometimes slims the lower face. The effect lasts about 4-6 months, after which the treatment can be repeated. The toxin does not remove the cause of bruxism, which is often stress or a bite problem, so it is worth combining it with a dentist consultation and a relaxation splint.

Contraindications

- Medicines affecting neuromuscular conduction (after consulting the doctor)
How to prepare
- For about a week before the treatment do not take aspirin or blood-thinning supplements without a consultation
- Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before the treatment

After the treatment: what to expect
Small bumps and bruises may appear at the injection points. Do not lie down for 4 hours, and avoid sport, saunas and massage of the jaw area for 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions
For people who clench or grind their teeth, wake up with a tense jaw or a headache, have worn teeth or enlarged masseter muscles. The treatment also helps when you feel tension in the jaw joint or hear clicking.
One treatment is usually enough, and it takes about 30 minutes. After 4-6 months, when the effect wears off, the treatment can be repeated.
